Import opening balances

Bring your opening trial balance into Epiow from a CSV or XLSX file, with a dry run and an undo.

Updated 5 October 2026

The Import opening balances tab in Books loads your starting position from a CSV or XLSX file. Nothing is written until you commit, and a committed import can be undone.

Import your opening trial balance

  1. In the Books app, select Import opening balances. The Import your books panel opens.
  2. Choose your File (.csv or .xlsx). It needs the columns account code, debit, credit and as-of date.
  3. Enter the As-of date, or leave it empty if the file has an as-of date column.
  4. Select Run dry run and check the Column mapping. If a column was matched wrongly, change it (or choose Ignore this column) and select Run again with this mapping.
  5. Review Total debit, Total credit and Difference. The screen shows Ready to commit only when the file can be committed; otherwise it shows Cannot commit yet. Anything under Errors to fix is listed by row, for example an account code your chart of accounts does not have. Warnings are listed too.
  6. Select Commit import.

The opening balance posts to your ledger as one journal. Check it on the Statements tab.

Undo

Under Earlier imports, select Undo next to an imported file. The opening journal is reversed, so the original stays in the books marked reversed and nothing is deleted. Fix your file and run a new dry run for the corrected import.

Importing is for owners and admins.
